Responsibilities of WWOOFers (Volunteers)

I want to become a WWOOFer (volunteer) with WWOOF-Germany and I declare that as a member of the WWOOF-Germany Organisation, I will adhere to the following:

  • I am genuinely interested in learning about organic agriculture, rural living and ecologically-sustainable lifestyles.
  • I want to take part in daily farm life and I want to help my hosts with their farm work.
  • During my WWOOF farm stay, I will comply with the agreements made between myself and my host regarding all activities and living arrangements on the farm.
  • I am currently a member of WWOOF-Germany and will present a valid copy of the farm list or my membership card upon arriving at a WWOOF farm (print your membership card here: My Profile & My Account).
  • My WWOOF membership is not transferable and I will not pass on log in data or farm contacts to third parties.
  • I am responsible for ensuring I am sufficiently insured while WWOOFing. (www.oveuropa.com offers a range of insurance policies for WWOOFers!)
  • I am responsible for my own health and safety during my stay on a WWOOF farm.
  • Prior to staying on a WWOOF farm, I will communicate with the hosts in detail, to clarify the expectations of both parties. In doing so, I will not simultaneously send impersonal mass-email enquiries to a large number of farms. In particular, I will notify a host as soon as possible if I have made a commitment to stay on their farm but can no longer do so due to a change in plans. (Farms may refuse requests from other WWOOFers in order to have you stay on their farm, so itís unfair to your fellow WWOOFers and very disappointing for you hosts if you donít let them know in advance if your plans have changed).
  • For minors under the age of 18: I must provide the host with a declaration of consent signed by a parent/ legal guardian.
  • I will behave in a friendly and respectful manner at all times, including during any conflicts.
  • For WWOOFers from overseas: I am responsible for ensuring that I have the necessary identity papers and visas for my stay in Germany.
  • I understand that WWOOF-Germany is only responsible for providing the farm list. I accept that WWOOF-Germany will not be made liable for any loss or damage related to a stay on a WWOOF farm (www.oveuropa.com offers liability insurance policies for WWOOFers!)

Responsibilities of farms

I want to become a host (farm) with WWOOF-Germany and I declare that as a member of the WWOOF-Germany Organisation, I will adhere to the following:

  • My farm is run using agricultural methods based on sustainable, organic cycles and strives to achieve a harmonious balance between humans and nature. (If this is the case, then a certification as an organic farm is not strictly required, especially for smallholdings/ self-sufficiency farms.)
  • I (and/ or other persons in charge at the farm) will teach WWOOFers basic organic farming skills, ethical animal husbandry practices and self-sufficiency farming techniques. I am happy to share my practical skills and experiences.
  • As a WWOOF-Farm, my farm will function as a learning centre where knowledge and experience about ecological farming can be shared amongst WWOOF members. In this context, my farm will be an open-minded space for friendly, international cultural exchanges and a will be part of a network that brings together people from different cultures and generations, people from the city and people from rural areas.
To facilitate such exchanges, I will welcome WWOOFers to my farm as volunteer helpers and I will integrate them into daily farm life in a way that allows them to gain knowledge and experience and allows them to understand my reasons for choosing ecological farming methods.
  • Neither the hospitality, lodging, food or other benefits hosts provide to WWOOFers, nor the volunteer help WWOOFers provide, represents any kind of contractual tie. They do not in any way entitle either party to compensation for the benefits or help provided. In particular, they do not represent an employment contract of any kind. Rather, hospitality and volunteer help are the basis for teaching and learning organic farming skills, and for having new social and cultural experiences.
  • If a host chooses to enter into a contract of employment with a WWOOFer, then this is certainly beyond the scope of a WWOOF stay. Hosts and WWOOFers entering into contracts of employment do so at their own risk and responsibility. WWOOF-Germany is not involved in any way in such contracts of employment and they are not in any way part of WWOOF-Germanyís aims and purpose as an organisation.
  • I understand that as a host, I have no status of authority over WWOOFers, such as in traditional employee/employer relationships. I also understand that WWOOFers have no formal obligation to carry out work for a host. A WWOOF stay can be terminated by either party at any point in time.
  • I am aware that many WWOOFers may have little prior farming experience or skills, when they come to stay on my farm.
  • I will ensure that health and safety legislation is adhered to on my farm. I will instruct WWOOFers not to carry out any dangerous tasks and not to use any dangerous machinery, tools, equipment, plants or other materials. I will not allow WWOOFers to access dangerous working areas or processes.
  • I will not charge WWOOFers any money for their stay.
  • I will provide accommodation to WWOOFers that is pleasant, clean, dry, safe and which poses no health-hazards.
  • Where possible, I will try to provide organic and/ or regional food for WWOOFers and invite them to share joint meals.
  • I will endeavour to reply to all genuine (personally addressed) enquiries by WWOOFers, even if it is just to let them know that Iím not currently taking on (additional) WWOOFers.
  • I will communicate with WWOOFers in detail, to clarify the expectations of both parties, prior to their stay on my farm.
  • For minors under the age of 18: I will require WWOOFers that are minors to provide a declaration of consent signed by a parent/ legal guardian.
  • I will make sure to check that WWOOFers have a current and valid proof of membership (a valid copy of the farm list or a printed membership card). (You can also check this online here: My Profile & My Account – Check Membership)
  • I will behave in a friendly and respectful manner at all times, including during any conflicts.
  • I understand that WWOOF-Germany is only responsible for providing the farm list. I accept that WWOOF-Germany will not be made liable for any loss or damage related to the stay of a WWOOFer on a WWOOF farm (www.oveuropa.com offers liability insurance policies for WWOOFers!)
